EVENT: Keep Calm and Carry On: The Challenges of Managing Donald Trump

Jonathan Rose is Professor and Head of the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University, a job he considers, to quote Keith Richards, a “lucky accident.” He studied at University of Toronto and Queen's where he received his Ph.D. He has taught at a number of places including the International Studies Centre (Herstmonceux, UK), Charles University in Prague, Bratislava, Slovakia, Kwansei Gakuin University in Osaka, Japan and the School of Political Science and International Relations at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

His research interests are varied, and include Canadian politics, mass media, political communication, political advertising, propaganda. More recently he has been interested in the practice of deliberative democracy and the demands such experiments make on citizens and governments. As part of that, from April 2006 to June 2007 he was on leave from Queen’s to serve as the Academic Director of the Ontario Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform.

Jonathan has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Canadian politics, political communication, federalism, the mass media, electoral systems, intergovernmental relations and public policy. He has received excellence in teaching awards In 2010 and in 2011.

Jonathan is the author or co-author of several books, among them two books that explore deliberative democracy and citizen involvement. Might that interest come up in his talk for us?
