EVENT: AI Governance: Setting the Rules for an Automated Future

Teresa Scassa is the Canada Research Chair in Information Law and Policy at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. She is the author or co-author of several books, and is a past member of the External Advisory Committee of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. She is a member of the GEOTHINK research partnership, and has written widely in the areas of intellectual property law, law and technology, and privacy.

Artificial intelligence technologies are already deeply embedded in our lives and activities. They are in our homes, workplaces, and vehicles. They could transform healthcare, and might (or might not) hold solutions to some of the world’s most challenging problems. At the same time, these technologies profile and predict, shaping how we are seen by others and impacting our choices and opportunities.

These powerful and potentially transformative technologies are moving faster than the law, raising important questions about how we can govern them in the public interest. This talk will consider how AI technologies are also transforming law-making and explores what we must do to harness the good and restrain the bad in AI systems.
